My CPT and Tutoring Journey

Looking back over the years, I would say that the answer was no.  I never once saw myself as a personal trainer let alone becoming a tutor in this field. I knew nothing about fitness, and I was never a fit person to begin with (like ever)! I always struggled with proper nutrition and exercise. I would go on a trendy diet and do cardio for days with little to no results. I would get frustrated and keep on repeating this unfortunate cycle over and over again. In the end, no matter what I did, the end result was the regain of unhealthy bodyweight that was always greater than the loss that originally occurred. I was slowly getting heavier and heavier and unhealthier by the months and eventually the years. This lasted for decades until my early 40s when I finally got involved in a solid program and properly educated myself that I was able to lose the weight and maintain the weight loss successfully. (For my full story in my weight loss journey, please see my blog at Catalysttt Fitness.) Motherhood, pain from chronic lower back problems, and the pandemic were my personal “catalysttt moments” that led to the real research and physical hard work to figure out once and for all what real nutrition and fitness was actually about and how it worked for my body. In making this discovery, I was able to lose over 60lbs close to the end of 2020 as the pandemic continued to rage on.

As I continued the maintain the weight loss and further take care of my health, a fire built up inside of me that led to a passion for fitness. I simply had to learn more and know more about this process and how it worked on a multitude of levels. This is when I made the ultimate decision to obtain my certification as a personal trainer that started with enrolling in a certification program with International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and eventually led to also enrolling and studying with National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) at the same time... Yes, two separate certification programs to become a certified personal training taken at the same time! I kid you not!  It absolutely was not easy and at various times, I felt like giving up, but I kept on going until I secured both credentials. It meant the world to me to learn as much as possible both then and now. With much confidence and drive, I can proudly say that I am now a certified personal trainer both coach and tutor who is ready, willing, and able to help people with both their health and fitness transformation but also help those people that are ready to enter the CPT world professionally at any age or time of your life! I firmly believe that it is possible to not only make huge changes for a better-quality life but to also be able to make a solid career change, pursue your passions and dreams (old or new) at any stage of your life. I would particularly like to see the face and representation of a CPT to change and reflect something closer to what a client can relate to. When you see someone in very similar situation and circumstances succeed, it brings a jolt of reality to your own situation and a chance for real thought and assessment. Is it really true that I can’t do this? Or is it possible that I can? Accountability begins to step in, and one can’t fall back anymore on old excuses that keeps a person from progressing.

I remember back in 2020 after the weight loss had occurred and was contemplating whether I should proceed with enrollment. I was full of a lot of doubt and was not sure if at my age if it would make any sense. After all, this was an industry full of youth picture perfect people that entered into this field in their early 20s if not earlier. Where would I fit into that in my early 40s? I wasn’t sure until I researched and found stories of inspirational people who found fitness later in life that stepped up and made the decision without reservation. They just had the drive and the passion to do it. When I realized that I wasn’t alone and that I too was just as capable, I immediately made the decision and stuck with the commitment without further hesitation.

After all these years, the answer that I gave to myself – the insecure deconditioned unhealthy and struggling young woman – the no finally turned to a yes and I took the steps to make that transformation a reality. As “The Catalysttt,” let me assist you in taking that first step in the chain reaction to your CPT evolution!

Top 5 General CPT Program Study Topics and Concepts

After determining the right CPT program has been selected and enrollment process has been completed, studying becomes the next big undertaking. In the very beginning, when I began studying with ISSA and realized the volume of information that I had to understand and remember, I felt overwhelmed and wondered if I had made a mistake. It was a lot of information that I had forgotten and left behind in high school and college that I didn’t know if I wanted to revisit. And then, I had to complicate the whole matter by signing up to study another CPT program (NASM) in the middle of still completing course work with the first CPT program! But, as I got things together and settled into both programs, I began to see the overall same framework of concepts and topics needed to successfully pass them: E xercise Science H uman Biology & Anatomy N utrition C lient Behavior & Personal Development O perating as an Effective and Professional Trainer B onus Sixth Topic: CPR and...

NASM CPT Program Review 2021-2022 Studying for a CPT Program: What You Should Know Series

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) has a solid reputation in the fitness industry. When a new personal trainer at the beginning of his or her career is conducting research and trying to figure out which is the best and well-known CPT program to enroll in, you will find that NASM’s CPT program will appear a lot. You will either hear or see it a lot from fellow CPTs that have or are looking to get it or from fitness employers requiring the cert towards either employment or to move up to the next level in job status. This means that it is well worth the time to research and potentially place near the top 5 of your consideration. If you review their website, you’ll easily find information about all of the programs that they have to offer, the pricing, topics and concepts covered, etc. But the one thing that I can provide to you that you won’t gain from the website particularly a person with no previous educational knowledge or skills in the field is: W hat was it like? ...
