My Path to Tutoring

I can completely sympathize and now empathize with others that it can be really overwhelming and downright daunting to teach yourself about proper nutrition, health, wellness, and fitness. But then to solidify your knowledge base by becoming a credentialed, certified personal trainer (CPT) and obtaining the certification takes it to a whole other level. I should know because I enrolled and studied in two separate CPT programs through two respected and well-known professional fitness organizations known as International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) at the same time to become a truly knowledgeable and confident CPT in my early 40s. Now, although I would not suggest to others due to time and money constraints and stress factors to follow suit, enroll in, and study two CPT programs at the same time, I know that it was definitely the right decision for me. Overall learning (particularly when I am passionate about the subject matter), usually flowed fluidly for me. Not that it was easy for me to learn, but I was always resourceful in overcoming any learning obstacles in my path. This is why I would say that I am rather embarrassed and a bit sad to admit that all of my life, I knew very little about proper nutrition and fitness even if this topic should have seemed easy for me. I knew bits and pieces of it and could get by, but it just wasn’t enough to make a long-lasting difference and I always felt too busy to stop and really research and process this information in a beneficial manner. For years I yo-yo dieted until my weight ballooned up to beyond and extra 60lbs was not needed on my frame. At which point I couldn’t allow it to go on any longer and I began conducting the real research to lose the weight. This happened during the pandemic. When my knowledge finally leveled up to it, I was able to make better decisions and choices to lose the weight. A year later and counting, I have successfully kept the weight off. It was initially wonderful and great, but I needed to know more. I was following a wonderful program developed by a well-known and respected CPT but even after going through her program, I still needed to take my learning a step further. Since I have a background in working in academia and an M.S. in Human Resource Management, my natural inclinations tomorrows learning kicked in and I discovered that I really needed to obtain more pieces to this puzzle if not all pieces to not only understand it on a more physiological and intimate level for me but to also be able to help others with their struggles on two different levels:

  • Clients - Others in need of CPT services.
  • CPT candidates - Others seeking to become a CPT in an effort to also help others by providing a professional service.

I have always believed in (and still do) one important saying:

Each one, teach one.

I stand by my belief in being able to serve and assist others in multiple of areas of their journey and in the end have a greater impact in a multitude of ways both directly and indirectly to current and future clients and CPTs. Apparently although there is a wealth of information being shared globally with social media and the internet, there isn’t enough resources available that is steeped in science-based facts that is digestible and simplified for quick understanding and reference. Also, I gained a certain level of perspective from enrolling and passing two different CPT programs and I now see through my own experiences how difficult learning and understanding the subjects and concepts are. It would appear that the act of learning and remembering is one level while knowledge application is a whole different level to aspire to obtain. How does one person get to both levels on his or her own in order to become a competent, knowledge, and confident CPT? The answer is it all depends upon the sort of person you are and the overall tools and resources available to you. Through my tutoring, I would like to serve as “The Catalysttt” a starting point in the learning process that ignites the spark to one’s learning potential.

Now, if you are seeking to get certified as a trainer and are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. Although I wouldn’t recommend studying for two certificates at the same time as I did, I can absolutely assist and provide you with some solid insight and resources to help in your request to becoming a successful and confident CPT with the current CPT you are considering or are actively enrolled in.

My tutoring services include such content as, but not limited to, study guides, in-depth blog posts in relevant subject matters, and practical, advanced, and informative videos (where as indicated) for free. Top 5 General CPT Program Study Topics and Concepts

After determining the right CPT program has been selected and enrollment process has been completed, studying becomes the next big undertaking. In the very beginning, when I began studying with ISSA and realized the volume of information that I had to understand and remember, I felt overwhelmed and wondered if I had made a mistake. It was a lot of information that I had forgotten and left behind in high school and college that I didn’t know if I wanted to revisit. And then, I had to complicate the whole matter by signing up to study another CPT program (NASM) in the middle of still completing course work with the first CPT program! But, as I got things together and settled into both programs, I began to see the overall same framework of concepts and topics needed to successfully pass them: E xercise Science H uman Biology & Anatomy N utrition C lient Behavior & Personal Development O perating as an Effective and Professional Trainer B onus Sixth Topic: CPR and...

NASM CPT Program Review 2021-2022 Studying for a CPT Program: What You Should Know Series

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) has a solid reputation in the fitness industry. When a new personal trainer at the beginning of his or her career is conducting research and trying to figure out which is the best and well-known CPT program to enroll in, you will find that NASM’s CPT program will appear a lot. You will either hear or see it a lot from fellow CPTs that have or are looking to get it or from fitness employers requiring the cert towards either employment or to move up to the next level in job status. This means that it is well worth the time to research and potentially place near the top 5 of your consideration. If you review their website, you’ll easily find information about all of the programs that they have to offer, the pricing, topics and concepts covered, etc. But the one thing that I can provide to you that you won’t gain from the website particularly a person with no previous educational knowledge or skills in the field is: W hat was it like? ...

You realized that you are knowledgeable, articulate, compassionate, physically capable, have the desire and strive to become an awesome CPT to lead and drive others towards success! But now, you have to figure out which professional organization you will defer to in obtaining your certification as a personal trainer. The program providers that I will be discussing are as follows:   PROGRAM PROVIDERS TO DISCUSS: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) International Sports Science Association (ISSA) American Council on Exercise (ACE) American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) ...
